What are the Griffith Avenue Mile course records?
A question we often get, is how long it takes to run the Griffith Avenue Mile? And what were the quickest times over the years?
Well, the average time for a runner to complete a mile is of course very varied depending on fitness level, experience, age etc. It really could be anything from 6 to 10 mins or more depending on your level. But what's most important is that this event is open to all abilities, and we look forward to seeing as many people taking part as possible.
What we can say for sure is the fastest times set on the Griffith Avenue Mile going all the way back to 1983.
Sydney Maree, the South African born American holds the official course record set on the 5th Nov 1983 in a time of 3:49:30. Then called the Dublin Straight Mile, this event was the beginning of it all and Sydney made a big splash with this time that has yet to be beaten.
Hiko Tonosa Haso holds the recent mens course record of 4:08 which he set in the 2022 race.
Michelle Finn holds the official womens course record of 4:35 also from 2022.
As for the upcoming 2023 race, with John Travers competing this year who has a mile PB of 3:55:44 and Ide Nic Dhomhnaill who ran 4:37 last year and is in the shape of her life having won the National 5k track championships (in a time of 15:44:81), the recent course records will definitely be challenged this year.
